Three Reasons Why You May Want to Consider Living in a Loft
Are you curious about all of the "loft" complexes that have recently been built? There are many that are currently being sold in Burbank, Hollywood, North Hollywood, Studio City, and of course Downtown L.A. . I have had mixed feelings about these. After all, this isn't New York City. The loft-type urban lifestyle is great if you can walk everywhere. And lets face it: out here in the L.A. area, we can hardly walk anywhere. We still need our cars, and a place to park them. But this is slowly changing. Finally, most of the new lofts are just like condos, only with fewer walls. There isn't much of a price difference, either. Here are several things you may want to consider if you'd like to buy one of these:
- Location, location, location. Whether its in downtown L.A., North Hollywood, or downtown Burbank, these projects are being built right in the thick of things. You could be living adjacent to all your favorite restaurants, movie theaters, etc. Who doesnt want to have a hip, happening neighborhood to live in and stroll through? For example, the recently-built Burbank Collectionis adjacent to an AMC 30 and right above several restaurants. You don't even need to cross a street. You'll still need your car -- but not as much. And isn't it better to walk home after two martinis than drive?
- Distance, distance, distance. If you work downtown, why drive two hours to work and back, when you could walk home for lunch? And if you work in the entertainment industry in Hollywood or Burbank, chances are you have very long work hours. Wouldnt it be nice to be that much closer to your own pad at the end of a long day? And can you beat the convenience of being able to just head downstairs for a take-out meal? Most of these complexes have small convenience stores, dry cleaners, and work out places either on site or just adjacent -- you can park your car one time, rather than the 3 to 6 times it takes when out running errands.
- Friends, friends, friends or at least neighbors. Loft projects often attract a similar demographic: young singles and couples. Many of these folks may have the same interests you do, and it will be easy to meet them when youre both downstairs at your buildings convenience mart or out walking your dogs. Wouldn't it be great to actually be able to get together with your friends more often than three times a year?
Update for early Spring 2011 for The Burbank Collection: prices are now starting around $319,000. If youd like to visit some downtown L.A., Hollywood or Burbank lofts, just give me a call and Ill be happy to arrange a tour for you. Occasionally, the Downtown Business Improvement District even arranges Saturday bus tours!
